In 2009, I became extremely concerned with the concept of Unique Identity for various reasons. Connected with many like minded highly educated people who were all concerned.

On 18th May 2010, I started this Blog to capture anything and everything I came across on the topic. This blog with its million hits is a testament to my concerns about loss of privacy and fear of the ID being misused and possible Criminal activities it could lead to.

In 2017 the Supreme Court of India gave its verdict after one of the longest hearings on any issue. I did my bit and appealed to the Supreme Court Judges too through an On Line Petition.

In 2019 the Aadhaar Legislation has been revised and passed by the two houses of the Parliament of India making it Legal. I am no Legal Eagle so my Opinion carries no weight except with people opposed to the very concept.

In 2019, this Blog now just captures on a Daily Basis list of Articles Published on anything to do with Aadhaar as obtained from Daily Google Searches and nothing more. Cannot burn the midnight candle any longer.

Legal scholar Usha Ramanathan describes UID as an inverse of sunshine laws like the Right to Information. While the RTI makes the state transparent to the citizen, the UID does the inverse: it makes the citizen transparent to the state, she says.

Good idea gone bad
I have written earlier that UID/Aadhaar was a poorly designed, unreliable and expensive solution to the really good idea of providing national identification for over a billion Indians. My petition contends that UID in its current form violates the right to privacy of a citizen, guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution. This is because sensitive biometric and demographic information of citizens are with enrolment agencies, registrars and sub-registrars who have no legal liability for any misuse of this data. This petition has opened up the larger discussion on privacy rights for Indians. The current Article 21 interpretation by the Supreme Court was done decades ago, before the advent of internet and today’s technology and all the new privacy challenges that have arisen as a consequence.

Your Aadhaar number can give away your bank name: Here's how

Bank Account Linking status by dialing USSD code

A new Aadhaar hack can reveal in which bank you have an account in. Aadhaar number, the 12-digit unique number issued by UIDAI or Unique Identification Authority of India could give away your bank name to anyone. UIDAI, the concerned agency that issues Aadhaar number has been yet again questioned about data safety after a process that was rolled out to check whether bank account was linked to a particular Aadhaar number is giving away name of the bank without a prior check.

One of the biggest problems with the process is it has no OTP integration which means anyone can check your bank name using your Aadhaar number.

We successfully checked bank names our friends and family who shared their Aadhaar number with us, and the details revealed by the below process was accurate. The process is an easy one if your Aadhaar number is available to anyone.

1. Dial *99*99*1# from any mobile.
2. A dialogue box will appear for you to enter 12-digit Aadhaar number.

3. After entering the Aadhaar number, the process will ask you to re-verify via another pop-up message. Confirm by pressing 1 or Change it by pressing 2.
4. On tapping 1, the dialogue box will show the name of the bank with which the Aadhaar is linked. The exact message reads, "Your Aadhaar number XXX is linked to Bank. Last updated on date and year."

Apart from the dialing USSD code method, UIDAI also allows you to check "Aadhaar and Bank Account Linking Status" via official site which is safe as it integrates OTP.

There are some limitations of the USSD code method to reveal bank name using your Aadhaar number as it only gives away bank name of the last account it was linked with. For example, if you have four accounts in four different banks then this process will reveal the name of the last bank that was linked with your Aadhaar number. We checked the process for several users, and mostly all bank names were revealed like HDFC, ICICI, SBI, IDBI, Axis, and more. However, there were few banks like Yes Bank and Kotak Mahindra which showed a generic message that read, "Your Aadhaar number XXX is linked with bank. Last updated on date and time."

While this could be termed as a minor loop hole from UIDAI side, the whole point of linking your bank account with Aadhaar is that it is not made public by anyway. The biggest fear is that the person with the Aadhaar number is not notified if someone is checking the status of bank linking via USSD code method.
