Nandan Nilekani is the man of the hour. The Infosys co-founder has been entrusted with the task of ensuring every Indian has a documented identity. Where many would have balked at this great responsibility, Nilekani, who is also a co-founder of NASSCOM, has taken it up with enthusiasm. As the chairman of UIDAI, he and his team are now close to coming out with the first UID cards. In this exclusive interview with CXOtoday, he talks about the project and what it means for India. Excerpts.

Now that the UIDAI has awarded its first contract to Mindtree, can you tell us what Mindtree will be responsible for?

Mindtree has been given the responsibility of developing the software application, in other words, the core UID application. This must be done both on the client side and, very importantly, on the biometrics end; so it has to integrate with retina scanners, fingerprint scanners, etc. The other part is the server side, which basically building the entire server, site software, administrative software, etc. This will then be connected to the biometric service provider.
