423 - Aroh Foundation - Enrolling Agency for UIDAI


AROH Foundation is empanelled as an Enrolling Agency (EA) by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for undertaking demographic and biometric data collection for UID enrollment. It is a very prestigious opportunity for the Foundation to be associated with UIDAI for the forthcoming project for the collection of biometric and demographic attributes of the residents of the nation.

What is UIDAI?

The UIDAI stands as an abbreviation for Unique Identification Authority of India. The UIDAI is an autonomous body which was conceived by Planning Commission to assist the community by providing unique identification to every indivisual. The role of UIDAI is to issue a verifiable unique identification that can be authenticated online in cost effective manner and is substantial to eliminate fake identities. Its role is to develop and implement the necessary institutional, technical and legal infrastructure to issue unique identity numbers to Indian residents.

What is the purpose of UIDAI?

As a nation wide project, UIDAI functions with the aim of eradication fradulence and cases of fake identities through the means of assembling biometric attributes like fingerprints, iris and face imprints of the individuals. Not only this, UIDAI encompasses the motive of providing identity proof the marginalised strata of the society too. UID will also be provided to children between the age group of 5-15 years. The first set of UID numbers will be issued between August 2010 and February 2011. Thereafter, 600 million UID numbers will be issued in the next five years.

What is UID’s modus operandi?

The data for UIDAI purports to be collected through several agencies of State and Central government like Departments of Rural Development (for MNREGA) and Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs (for PDS). At the central level these entities could be Banks, LIC and Oil Marketing Companies. The Registrar General of India will also be an important Registrar for the purpose of collection of demographic and biometric data for the project.

AROH Foundation is one of the implementing arms of UIDAI (renamed as AADHAR from April, 2010 onward) that will provide 16 Digit pin as a unique identofication pin to everyone.
