School students in Kerala will be the first in the country to secure the Unique Identification Number.

Here is yet another chance for the students of Kerala to record another ‘first' in the country.

School going students of the State will now have the privilege of becoming the first to secure the Unique Identification Number under the ‘Adhaar' project of Government of India.

Sixty lakh school students in the State, from Std I to XII, will be issued a Unique Identity Number before March 2011 as part of the ‘Adhaar' initiative.

Date collection

The project will be coordinated by the IT@School which will prepare the necessary data for each student in the State. The scheme will be piloted in two schools in October. IT@School executive director, Anvar Sadath, said here that the 12,000-plus schools in the State will be considered either as separate units or as clusters for the ‘Aadhaar' enrolment.

IT@School will deploy its own School Management System to collect necessary details from each student. Apart from the mandatory details like name, gender, date of birth and address prescribed under the ‘Adhaar' project, IT@School will collect other details including the class name, admission number and the name of the local body concerned. From this database the mandatory fields required for Aadhaar will be filtered using a separate software provided by the UIDAI.

After registration students will also undergo a biometric scanning of 10 fingers and the iris. Their photograph too would be taken and they will be given an enrolment number. Once this data is uploaded on the Unique Identification Authority of India server, the students will receive the 12-digit Aadhaaar number directly by post within 20 to 30 days.

The UIDAI has targeted an enrolment of one crore from Kerala before March 31, 2011. Even though it is not part of the Aadhaar scheme, the IT@School will also provide photo-identity cards to all school students.
