Aadhaar is the way towards e-governance and development, Maharashtra Chief Secretary J.P. Dange has said.
He was speaking of the project that will give unique identification (UID) numbers to every person in India. The ambitious project was launched nationwide by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA President Sonia Gandhi on September 29.
Mr. Dange was in Pune to inaugurate a workshop for all district collectors and municipal commissioners of the State on the working of the project. The workshop was held at Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration here on Thursday.
In Maharashtra, the Information Technology Department was the nodal agency for the project, he said. Registration in the State would begin on November 1 and 80 per cent of the work would be completed by April 2011, he added.
Secretary of Information Technology Ajay Bhushan Pandey gave a presentation on the benefits of UIDs. They would help those who do not have any proof of identity get facilities, he said.
