Ranchi: The Unique Identification Development Authority of India (UIDAI) will extend financial support upto Rs 10 crore for the states willing to develop application for maximising the utility of unique identification number—Aadhaar.
Talking to the iGovernment, UIDAI Director General Ram Sevak Sharma said the grant would be offered by the authority in keeping with its objective to bring in transparency in the system of governance.
“All the state governments have been asked to submit the proposal for integrating the delivery mechanism with Aadhaar numbers. The agency can offer grants upto Rs 10 crore for development of related computer applications,” Sharma added.
Prompted by the UIDAI proposal, the Jharkhand government is looking for additional financial incentive for development of software to maximise the application of Aadhaar module. The authority is already offering financial assistance upto Rs 200 to the state government for each enrolment for Aadhaar cards.
Jharkhand IT Secretary AP Singh, who has been appointed the nodal officer for the project in the state, said that five departments including Rural Development, Welfare, Human Resources Development and Civil Supplies were planning to launch UID based operation.
“Pilot project of the financial inclusion of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) workers will be launched at two blocks, Kanke and Baghmara, by the end of this month.
Under the scheme, we intend to make the wage payments through Aadhaar numbers. Once the project is implemented successfully, we would try to include other departments’ programme as well,” Singh said.
Officials of all the five departments, which are planning to integrate Aadhaar numbers as key factor for operation in the first phase, had been told to come up with suitable proposals to seek fund from the UIDAI for application development.
Jharkhand is likely to benefit the most from UIDAI plan, as it happens to be the first state where Aadhaar number was being used as a medium for financial inclusion of deprived sections of the society.
