The hardware policy of the country does not look at all the dimensions. Even the stance of the government is not clear on whether it wants to encourage people for domestic manufacturing, computer peripherals maker Logitech said.

According to the policy, a laptop stand comes under the furniture category and huge taxation is levied on it, cited Subrotah Biswas, country manager (India and south west Asia) of Logitech, as an example.

“If you look at each of the product category, the way the quality has been defined in terms of customs duty or the taxation and various other forms do not differentiate and are inconsistent,” Biswas said.

He said, “India is one of the key focus regions in the APJ region for Logitech, and the company is looking at not less than 40 per cent growth in 2011.” Logitech sees wireless products are picking up pace and people are disliking wires.

“But still, there is a mismatch between price competitiveness and how the consumer sees value in it. The challenge lies in bringing out more and more wireless products and at the same time enhancing user experience. Also, the line between IT and consumer electronics is fading away, as everything is converging now,” he added.

Logitech recently introduced rechargeable Logitech wireless illuminated keyboard K800, which features light and motion sensors to adjust automatically to suit lighting conditions, ensuring right amount of backlight, when needed, while conserving battery life when there is no need. Motion sensors detect the user hands as they approach to turn the backlighting on and to turn it back off when the hands move away.

Biswas said, “The company is looking at HD webcams in a big way, as video conferencing is expanding the use in corporates.” He added, “Logitech Pro9000 is the only camera that could meet the certification standards sent by the UID authorities. The company is also looking at expanding into Tier II and Tier III cities by expanding its channel network.”
