Governor flagged UID 'AADHAAR' Project in the state
04 March, Rangpo:
He’s a first citizen of Sikkim, Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh today formally inaugurated the Unique Identification Number UID project in the state at Raj Bhawan in Rangpo. The Governor in his addressal appealed the team leading the project to cover 100% in the state and make it a success story. Governor also enrolled himself in the UID. He also urged the media to come forward for the UID project to swiftly be carried in the state at remotest corners.
The project AADHAAR is a special mechanism by which the individual citizen of the nation will get an unique identification. The fulfilment of the said mission will enable the citizen to avail all the centrally sponsored benefits, like a bank account, flagship programmes, ration card etc. It is estimated that the project will be accomplished by current year end and the UID will be provided to the citizens via post. In the state the programme will be held in all the block level locations.
Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been setup by the Government of India with the mandate to issue unique identification number of Aadhaar to all residents in the country. UIDAI proposes to create a platform to first collect the identity details like demography, and then perform authentication that can be used by several government and commercial service providers. In order to ensure that each identity is unique and unduplicated, biometric details like, finger prints of all ten fingers of the hand, iris and photograph of each and every person will be captured. According to official sources, in the state Department of Economic, Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation (DESM&E) will be carrying out the project. It may be noted that Chief Minister Pawan Chamling was the first to enrol in UID on 01 March this month at his residency in the capital Gangtok.
