Dehradun: Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India Nandan Nilekani said here on Friday that half of the population is likely to be issued Aadhaar numbers in next four years.
Nilekani said, “Our target is to enroll 600 million people in the next 4 years”, but refused to give any deadline to complete the project.
Speaking to reporters after an event at the prestigious Doon School, he said that since October a target of making 10 lakh UID per day has been following. Besides, the government has also formed a task force whose help would be taken to provide subsidy to benefit poor people directly.
Nilekani said that in the states of Himachal, Jharkhand, Tripura, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Delhi the work on this project is going ahead in full swing, adding that it would soon begin in Uttarakhand.
Hinting at initial hitches, he said the use of UID would benefit people a lot, as they would be able to maintain even their bank accounts. He, however, expressed hope that people would soon come to know about its benefits.
According to him, the report related to UID has to be submitted to the government in June, after that in next six month its pilot project would be implemented.
Nilekani made it clear that UID is not related to the identification of nationality rather it would be an identification of an individual.
Further, he informed that only 3 million people have so far been covered since the launch of the project in September 2009.
Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique number which the UIDAI will issue for all residents. The number will be stored in a centralised database and linked to the basic demographics and biometric information of each individual.
