MUMBAI: A college project could land engineering and other technical college students instant recognition and monetary rewards.

The state government has announced a state-wide competition for technical college students and graduates for designing application software for citizen services planned to be linked to the unique identification cards (UID) being issued to citizens.

According to a government resolution issued on Friday, final year students and graduates from technical education streams (like engineering, BSc, BCA and MCA) can participate in groups of four. Participating colleges will have to divide enrolled students into groups of four.
Software designed by each group will be treated as college project work. The resolution states that colleges will have to assist the students in designing the software. After submission of all projects, each participating college will have to send an entry to compete with projects from other colleges at the university level.

The GAD circular states that a five-member team, led by the divisional commissioner, will ratify all projects. Three top projects will be eligible for awards of up to Rs 2 lakh (Rs 50,000 for the college and Rs 1.5 lakh for the students). Prize winners at the university level will compete at the state level, where an expert team led by IIT professors would evaluate their work.

Participants are permitted to modify their projects for improving their business worthiness. Prizes will be distributed to the five best projects and the state will make use of the applications for the UID scheme. Students winning the first prize will get Rs 4 lakh, and their college Rs 1 lakh. Students winning the second and third prizes will get Rs 2.40 lakh and Rs 1.60 lakh respectively, while their colleges will get Rs 60,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively. The fourth prize winner will get Rs 1 lakh, while the fifth prize winner will get Rs 50,000.
