1376 - Maharashtra’s cattle to get ID tags - TOI

Sandeep Ashar, TNN, Jun 6, 2011, 03.20am IST
MUMBAI: Just like citizens, the state's cattle population will be provided unique identification numbers.

The Maharashtra Livestock Development Board (MLDB) plans to take up the work of implanting microchips (smart tags) on the ear or suitable body parts of the cattle.

The smart tags will have a unique identification number and when connected to a sensor and will provide details on the dietary needs and health of the animal. Daily milk yield reports will also be available to the state animal husbandry department and cattle owners.

D S Zagade, commissioner in the state animal husbandry department (AHD), said, the data made available using the smart tags will also help undertake disease control measures for an ailing animal.

The Maharashtra Animal Identification and Recording Authority (MAIRA) has been set up by the MLDB to implant tags and register cattle; MAIRA will also be responsible for maintaining online records.

Dr Dhanajay Parkale, deputy commissioner (planning) in the AHD, said, the government was hoping that constant updates on dietary needs and health will help the farmers finalize their livestock management plan more effectively.

"The technology will enable farmers to retain those animals giving a higher milk yield. The plan was to enrol all the farmers and cover the entire cattle population in five years," Parkale added.

Zagade said, MAIRA planned to initially manage a pilot project within a month in organized dairy farms. However, officials indicated that limited funds with the MDLB could pose a roadblock in the implementation of the plans. Zagade said, there were plans to rope in the faculty of Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University for implanting tags.

Smart tags will have an identification number and will provide details on dietary needs and health of the animal.
