For Shivaprakash S M, a senior citizen from Jayanagar, getting an application for UID turned out to be an impossible task on Friday at Jayanagar post office, with officials telling him 'come next month'. Even if he gets the form, he may get an appointment only next year.

So if you want to apply for Aadhaar, hang on for six months. There is a long list of token holders waiting for their appointments for biometric capture.

Bangaloreans may be enthusiastic about getting their names registered in the Unique Identification Number (UID) project Aadhaar, but there are no appointments that head post offices in the city can allot for citizens till January 2012.

For Balagangadhar A T, who made a trip from his Kengeri residence to Jayanagar post office, the answer was to come after a month. "First of all, the service of Aadhaar is not available across the city. I have travelled from Kengeri just to hear that applications will not be issued now. There must at least be a helpline to cater to public queries," he said.

Though only 40-50 appointments can be given in a day, more than 250 persons are walking into the city's 12 head post offices which are issuing the UID. Curious, anxious persons walking into the post offices hoping to get UID, but coming out disappointed was a common scene on Friday when TOI did a ground check on the project implementation.

Overloaded with more than 2,500 applications at each post office, the officials have stopped issuing applications. "Since June 25, we have issued 2,500 applications, but only 500 have been received so far. Thus, we have stopped giving applications. Appointments have been given till January 24, 2012," said Hitesh K R, supervisor, Aadhaar, at Jayanagar head post office.

The rush at post offices is due to the anxiety that public have to get the ID cards done at one shot, which is not happening as of now. The Basavanagudi head post office has so far given away about 1,800 applications and appointments have been given till December.

"We are not issuing any more forms. A circular sent by UID directed us to make use of photocopies of the forms and we are informing the public. But it is difficult to manage the mammoth task as more than 250 persons walk into our office daily," said Chikkannanavar B S, assistant post master at Basavanagudi post office.
