Mumbai:

Seven months after the unique identification card (UID) project was launched, the registration rate still remains slow with only 27 per cent of the city’s population having registered itself till now. The deadline to complete registration of the estimated population of 1.25 crore is March 2012.

In the current scenario, Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will ask the state government to provide them with services of state-appointed vendors who are carrying out the central government project, so that work moves faster.

Out of the estimated population of 1.25 crore, about 33.8 lakh citizens have registered themselves so far. The activity began on January 26 and has to be wound up by March 2012. The civic body has set up 142 UID centres across the city, all within municipal school premises. Each centre has about five machines, where a maximum of 250 registrations can be done per day.
