Problems galore for making UID cards
New Delhi: The move of the government to extend the deadline of making UID (Aadhaar) cards has failed to quench the public anger over the issue.
Even after standing in long queues for hours, Aadhaar cards of people are not being made. To make the situation even worse, applicants are being made to take several rounds of the office to furnish all the required documents.
In an effort to avoid the problems, people are searching for centres with smaller queues where the work could be expedited without giving any money.
Ten agencies deployed for making Aadhaar cards in Delhi were expected to complete the task by September 31, 2011.
These agencies were able to register only 70, 000 names. As per the 2011 census, Delhi encompasses a population of 1.80 crore. Out of this figure, around 63 lakh have enrolled themselves for the cards.
The government has asked the agencies to handover the cards to people by January next year.
The District Collectors have been asked to install more machines and keep a regular check on their functioning.

Deputy Director of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSI), VK Sharma informed that the pilot project of Aadhaar cards was launched in January 2011, but the actual process of making cards could be started in July.
“There is lack of awareness amongst the people about Aadhaar cards. Anyone applying for the card needs to submit photograph, identity card and address proof at any centre,” he said.
Sharma added that if any officer demands bribe for making the card, one can register his/her complaint to the Commissioner or the SDM.
