Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in a letter to the Prime Minister on Thursday urged him to instruct the Planning Commission to issue a note to the Cabinet on the status of the UIDAI.
Chidambaram sought clarity on whether the Registrar-General of India (RGI) or the UIDAI would carry on with the task of capturing the biometric data in the country. Recently, a Standing Committee of the Parliament rejected the UIDAI Bill.

The letter also raised questions over the issue that UIDAI didn't accept the data collected by the Home Ministry, further causing additional expenditure. The ministry also asked the PM to get the issue resolved at the earliest to avoid further confusion.
Chidambaram had earlier said that the issue with the Cabinet Committee should be resolved and alleged that UID's biometric census lacks security criteria.
