Chennai: Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has likened the central government-sponsored scheme, Aadhaar, to the emergence of the internet.

In a study titled ‘Aadhaar: An Indian megatrend — Leveraging the potential’, BCG says the emergence of the programme “is accentuated by the fact that it occurs concurrently with other key Indian trends, such as ubiquitous connectivity and content availability, urbanisation, mobility, rise in literacy, increasing emphasis on inclusion and broader socio-economic trends”.

Aadhaar caters to each individual by providing a unique identity number that meets three criteria: Ensuring universality, avoiding duplication and providing biometric authentication.

UIDAI and National Population Register hope to cover the entire country by June 2013. The expected ramp-up of Aadhaar is, thus, much faster than internet growth or even the mobile subscriber revolution. The report says opportunities in the post-Aadhaar world will see applications ranging from those that can facilitate social welfare schemes to mainstream applications that can have a significant impact on the development infrastructure of the country.
