Nellore: The data being collected for National Population Register (NPR) in some parts of the district will be uploaded to Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) website for the purpose issuing Aadhaar cards.

The NPR is one of the most ambitious projects in the country and it aims at creating a comprehensive database of all residents in India with unique identification numbers. The activity includes house listing by enumerator, scanning of NPR schedules, data digitisation, biometric enrolment and consolidation, de-duplication by UIDAI and issuance of Aadhaar number.

There is also a proposal to issue identity/smart card. Civil supplies department has hired a private agency to open centres in the areas where NPR is not in progress for the enrolment of Aadhaar cards shortly.

Joint collector B. Lakshmikantham has disclosed this while speaking to this newspaper. According to him, 19 lakh citizens have been enrolled out of 29 lakh population in the district for Aadhaar cards. The ongoing exercise for NPR has covered part of the balance.

As of now NPR is in progress at Kavali town. As many as 100 centres have been opened to record demographic and biometric details at Kavali.

Mr Lakshmikantham said that Aadhaar card will not be demanded by gas agency or other agency till enrolment of all the citizens is complete in the district.
