MUMBAI: Maharashtra has registered 6.6 crore residents for the Unique Identification Number (UID) or Aadhar card -- the highest in the country.
The state government initially launched a pilot project in six districts and later added six more districts. These include Mumbai city, Mumbai suburban, Wardha, Pune, Amravati, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Latur, Jalna, Aurangabad, Ratnagiri and Gondia. In Mumbai it has achieved 80% registration while in Wardha it has touched 92%.
In Maharashtra 12 schemes have been up for pilot implementation of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The schemes are mostly around student scholarships, pension schemes, Janani Suraksha Yojana etc. Officials said by March 2014 they plan to achieve most of the Aadhar registration in the state. However, there are several complaints of people not having received their Aadhar cards, data being lost and residents being forced to reapply. Several residents also complained that their names have been wrongly spelled.
