They used to charge their victims Rs100 for issuing Aadhar cards.
Maninagar police arrested two crooks on Monday for cheating more than 100 residents of different societies and apartments in Maninagar area by promising to provide them Aadhar cards. Interestingly, the duo shares the same name, surname, age and address. They have been identified as Jitendra Amrabhai Mali (19) and Jitendra Bhavraram Mali (19), both residents of Badmer in Rajasthan.
Investigation revealed that the duo came to Ahmedabad a year ago. They hatched a plan to collect money from city dwellers by promising to offer Aadhar cards at their doorstep.
The duo posed as government representatives and visited different societies and apartments. They also carried fingerprint scanners and other paraphernalia related to Aadhar card.
According to police, the crooks cheated the residents by saying that they were issuing cards to citizens under a campaign started by the government. After taking the details and fingerprints, they would charge Rs100 as official fee to issue the cards. They collected money from more than 100 such residents.
However, doubting their claims, a few residents inquired at a local municipal office about the campaign. On learning about the fraud, Mahesh Shah, in-charge of Aadhar operations in the city, lodged a complaint at Maninagar police station on Monday. Based on his complaint, cops nabbed the duo and seized their laptop that has details of about 104 persons whom the duo had duped by then. Cops now suspect that they might have cheated more people in other cities and towns.
