DYFI activists shouting slogans in the office of Manu Gas Agency in Aluva demanding withdrawal of demands for several documents for Aadhaar card linkage.

More than 100 DYFI activists gheraoed the owner of Manu Gas Agency in Aluva for more than three hours on Wednesday demanding withdrawal of new rules attached to the merging of Aadhaar card number with the present consumer data.

According to reports, only Manu Gas Agency, out of four other agencies in Aluva area, had been demanding five documents for merging the Aadhaar number with the consumer data - two photographs, a copy of the Aadhaar card, a copy of the original registration certificate, a copy of the first payment receipt and an application form printed by the gas agency.

Lekha Janardhanan, a consumer who fainted before the office of the agency, said that she could not produce the original registration certificate as she had already lost the certificate. She got it transferred from another consumer while he was leaving for the US on employment.  Many of the other owners are also not in a position to produce the original, or even a copy of the certificate, as it had been lost years ago in most cases. Producing the first receipt of the LPG cylinder seemed impossible for a number of users as several years have passed since it was issued.

If a consumer doesn’t have the original receipt or registration form, the matter would be settled with an affidavit issued by a notary, said CPM area secretary V Saleem. “It’s already a troubling process, like eating food by twisting your hand around your head. But above all it’s time lost standing in the queue, and money lost, taking an affidavit by spending nearly `500”, he said.

However, the customers of Manu Gas Agency are scrambling around to meet the demands of the agency.

“As we had taken up the issue and demanded revoking the demand for the documents, the agency has withdrawn the demand for a three-rupee application form issued by the agency”, Salim said. The agency has also promised that they would talk with the Indian Oil officials and find out alternatives for the original registration and the first receipt, said Salim.
