DC | 31st Aug 2013

Kochi: Starting December 1, LPG subsidy will be provided to consumers only if they enroll under the Aadhaar card scheme and link it with their bank account.

The confusion over subsidy was clarified on Friday by Alok Tripathi, a senior official of the Union Petroleum Ministry,  after discussions with District Collector P.I.Sheik Pareeth.

“Steps have been taken to remove all practical difficulties in linking Aadhaar card numbers with the respective bank accounts of consumers. The process of providing subsidy through bank accounts will come into effect from September 1. However, consumers will have time till November 30 to complete the process”, Tripathi said.

There was confusion all over with the state government and public sector oil companies demanding the linking of Aadhaar cards with bank accounts for transferring subsidies and the Union Government saying the cards were not mandatory for getting subsidies.

In Ernakulam district, out of the total population of 32.7 lakh, 27.2 lakh people were allotted Aadhaar card numbers, the District Collector said. “The Aadhaar numbers can be submitted via gas agencies and Akshaya centres. People can also make use of the online and SMS facility to link their Aadhaar card numbers with the respective bank accounts.
