Kolkata, 15 Feb: State government intends to complete the process for disbursement of Aadhaar cards before the Lok Sabha elections.
Since around 54 per cent of the population is yet to receive the cards, the state home department has issued a fresh deadline for completing the process in at least 122 municipalities and six corporations.
The process was earlier scheduled to be completed by February. The state home department has thus urged the District Magistrates (DM) to monitor the disbursement process so as to expedite it.
Senior officials of the department held a video conference with the DMs recently wherein they have been asked to find out the areas in their districts that are lagging behind and accordingly take additional measures.
The DMs have been asked to ensure that people do not face any problem during the biometric enrolment.
Currently, Howrah ranks first among the districts in distribution of Aadhaar cards while in Hooghly, Cooch Behar, South Dinajpur, Murshidabad and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area, cards have been disbursed to more than half of the population.
The disbursement process is somewhat unsatisfactory in Nadia, South 24-Parganas, North 24-Parganas, Birbhum, Burdwan and Jalpaiguri with the worst performing districts being North Dinajpur and the three left wing extremism (LWE)-affected districts of Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore.
The DMs have been asked to expedite the process in districts where less than 50 per cent
population has received Aadhaar cards.
