Centre keen on adopting Adilabad model of Aadhaar linkage with services
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is likely to reintroduce the linking of Aadhaar numbers with distribution of subsidised LPG to weed out bogus connections and stem misuse of subsidy. This will be part of the endeavour of the Union government in the coming months to take advantage of the Aadhaar scheme in checking misuse of subsidies and strengthening the delivery mechanism, especially in respect of services offered.
As Adilabad has had successful linking of Aadhaar in different schemes, the Centre is likely to draw from the experience. Adilabad Collector Babu A., who is credited with successfully using Aadhaar numbers in a myriad of services, gave a presentation on Aadhaar-linked services to a group of concerned officials including top bureaucrats in the Central government in New Delhi on June 16 at a workshop ‘Leveraging Aadhaar for service delivery’.
The presentation is reported to have evoked considerable interest on the scope of using Aadhaar for the stated purpose.
Teams of experts will now arrive in this district to study the implementation and mechanism thereof with a view to replicating the experience at the national level.
“For example, we are using Aadhaar seeding for disbursal of pensions and wages in Mahtama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in 10 villages. We have opened as many as 53,000 bank accounts in the district using the micro-ATM-Aadhaar linkage which is the only one of its kind effort in the country,” Mr. Babu told The Hindu on Wednesday.
Aadhaar linkage has also thrown up possibilities for the Telangana government controlling misuse of subsidy in fertilizer which is to the tune of Rs. 1,00,000 crore. This may happen sooner than later as the TRS government is keen on checking pilferages in all sectors, mainly those which have subsidy component.
