NASHIK: In a bid to intensify the registration process for Aadhaar cards, the district administration has decided to carry out registrations through schools to accomplish its targets. At present, almost 77% of the population in the district has registered for Aadhaar.

Since the pace of Aadhaar registration has dropped, it has been decided to deploy 70% of the 120 kits in schools across the district to carry out the process for children.

A senior official pointed out that there has been a drop in the number of people coming forth for Aadhaar registrations after process of Aadhaar linking with the direct benefit transfer (DBT) was postponed by the central government.

Deputy collector Nilesh Jadhav said, "Of the total estimated population of 61.09 lakh in the district (as per 2011 census), registration of 46.70 lakh has been , that is 76.45%. We are now channelising energies to conduct Aadhaar registrations for school students."

The officer pointed out that there were some locations where kits were lying idle with not more than 10 applications being processed throughout the day. Hence, the decision was taken to take the kits to schools.

"We will first finish the registration of children in schools and then, depending upon the requirements, we may allow people to get them registered too on the school premises itself," Jadhav added.

"There were lesser numbers of kits made available to the municipal council areas. Hence, we have decided to move some kits there as well to help the registrations pick up. The registration percentage was only 15 in these areas as compared to the district average of 77%," the officer informed. In the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) area, 79% of the citizens have completed their registration, while in Malegaon, the percentage stood at 116% of the estimated population.

Jadhav added, "We are hopeful that the cent percent registration would be achieved in the next five months."

Every kit can process at the most 50 requests per day given the lengthy processes involved and hence it is taking time.
