KOLHAPUR: The district administration has recently received 60 machines for registering new holders of Aadhaar card. The service was suspended some months ago as it did not get sanctioned in the parliament.

According to the district administration's review report till August 31, as many as 31,40,401 people in the district have completed document submission for getting Aadhaar cards. The district has a population of 38 lakh.

Of the total number of people who have submitted the documents for registration, 21,50,603 have completed the computerization procedure, wherein the applicant's details and thumb prints are recorded. Once the card is printed, it gets uploaded on the Aadhaar portal supported by the Union government. The card is supposed to be delivered to the postal addresses of the citizens.

There are 195 Maha e-seva centres in the district of which 60 have received the new machinery for fresh registration. In the last 15 days, 3,816 people in the district have completed registration at these centres.

The NDA government had said that Aadhaar card alone is sufficient for opening a bank account. However, the card holders were in two minds as the then government had failed in getting the entire programme approved in the parliament. It was also rumoured that the new regime would scrap the project. However, the Union government decided to go ahead with it.

The district collector's office will closely monitor progress of the entire process.
