VELLORE: Two postal department employees, one of them the postmaster of Vaniyambadi postal station, were suspended for willful negligence and dereliction of duty for throwing Aadhaar cards into a dustbin and not distributing them in Basheerabad in Vaniyambadi Town.

Superintendent of Post Offices in Tirupattur Post Division, N P Sampath, ordered the suspension of postmaster of Vaniyambadi M Batrachians Pithan  and postman M Paranthaman on Sunday.

A total of 244 Aadhaar cards were found dumped in a garbage bin in Basheerabad on Saturday afternoon by local residents of Basheerabad. They alerted postal department officials and before the officials reached the spot, 37 persons had taken their cards from the bin, leaving 207 cards in the dustbin.

The postal department officials collected the cards and informed the Superintendent of the Tirupattur Post Division, Sampath.

“We conducted a detailed inquiry on Sunday. The inquiry revealed that Paranthaman had failed to distribute the cards to the respective persons and threw it in the dustbin. The inquiry also disclosed that he was not disbursing the letters properly in his beat number 5,” said Sampath. Based on the prima facie evidence against the postman, the department suspended him and the postmaster, who failed to take action. The department has initiated a departmental inquiry, said Sampath.
