Sivakasi-based advocate S M Anantha Murugan filed the PIL contending that the Supreme Court had restrained the oil companies from demanding Aadhaar card number to provide gas cylinders.

MADURAI: A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Madurai bench of the Madras high court challenging the central government's move to link Aadhaar and bank account details with domestic gas cylinder connection as part of the Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG (DBTL) scheme.

Sivakasi-based advocate S M Anantha Murugan filed the PIL contending that the Supreme Court had restrained the oil companies from demanding Aadhaar card number to provide gas cylinders.

"While so, the central government has introduced a new system, Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG (DBTL), by which it demands details of Aadhaar/bank account of the customer. Hence, the government's action should be restrained," the petitioner said.

When the matter came up for hearing, the division bench of Justices V Dhanapalan and V M Velumani ordered notices to the cabinet secretary, home affairs, petroleum and natural gas secretaries, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation of India's chairman, Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization's chief controller of explosives and state's chief secretary.
