Pune: The state government's department of women and child development has launched a state-wide campaign to enrol sex workers and their children under the UID (Unique Identification) scheme and give them Aaadhaar cards within a span of three weeks.
A government resolution (GR) to this effect was released on February 7. The GR recognizes the difficulties and barriers faced by sex workers with respect to producing the required documents for the Aadhaar card like identity (ID) or residential proofs to apply. It states that the issue of documentation should be resolved at the district level by the authorities concerned in consultation with the community and their collectives along with NGOs working with them.
As per the GR, district-level mobilization and enrolment camps will be organized from February 9 to 28 by the district women and child development officer in collaboration with the Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society, their district units and community collectives.
