India will soon become the only country in the world to have biometric data with no duplicacy in the voters’ list, Chief Election Commissioner H S Brahma said Saturday. He said this will be achieved by linking the unique ID Aadhaar number with the voter’s identity card.
“We are hopeful that Aadhaar numbers will the generated for the remaining 25-30 crore people (across India) by August this year. By the end of the year, the Aadhaar numbers will be linked to the elector’s photo identity card. And then India will be the only country in the world where there will be complete biometric of voters. Also, there will be not a single fraud or duplicate voters,” Brahma said.
Asked about SC order which had said that Aadhaar is not a prerequisite for availing public services, he said everyday lakhs of voters are seeding their names with Aadhaar card on their own. “Everyday our voters are themselves seeding (their names for Aadhaar cards). We do not want to make it compulsory but our voters themselves want it,” the CEC said. He said the EC was planning to revoke registration of political parties, which have never contested any election in the last 10 years.
