GUWAHATI:Chief Election Commissioner H S Brahma on Tuesday said the poll panel would complete the work on linking Aadhaar numbers with the Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) by August . “The work on linking Aadhar numbers with the EPICs will be completed by August. As for the South Indian states, the process will be completed by May. The EPIC details have been backed by Aadhaar data, creating a link between the two, so that there is no duplication in the electoral rolls,” the CEC said.
According to Brahma, Aadhar numbers’ linkage with the EPICs would also help the authorities to ascertain the migration of people from one place to another. “This will also ease the system wherein a person needs to submit an application to avail documents such as ration card etc. All that one will now need to do is to give his/her Aadhaar number,” he said.
The CEC also informed that Assembly elections in Assam would be held before May next year. “So far, EPICs have been issued to around 95 per cent of the 1.9 crore voters in the state. We will cover those left out by July,” he said.
