THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  ‘Friends of Police’, the community policing initiative of the city police, was launched by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala here on Tuesday.

Under this programme, a select number of volunteers who are ready to assist police will be chosen under various police station limits.

“This is a two-part programme. The selected persons will engage in taking up voluntary work  like assisting in taking accident victims to hospital. The group can also help in collecting  a database of migrant labourers in local areas which will prove to a reference to law-enforcement agencies in case of necessity. The process to finding the volunteers will begin immediately,’’ said City Police Commissioner H Venkatesh.
Volunteers who  become a part of ‘Friends of Police’,  can directly pass on information to the police.

For migrant labourers, police will record all their data including their photograph in association with the ‘Friends of Police’.

If the labourers possess Aadhaar card, the Aadhaar number of each of them will be collected along with their other details.
This could help police in identifying migrant labourers in case of any inquiry or in case of any exigency.

Depending on the success of the initiative in the capital, the initiative could be implemented in other districts in the state as well.
