Indicating continuation of the process of enrolling citizens for Aadhaar cards under the initiative launched by the previous UPA government, the Centre on Friday told the Supreme Court that the much thought-out scheme will ensure delivery of benefits/subsidies to individuals in a proper and timely manner and will also plug the leakages in the system.
The government in its fresh affidavit to the apex court stated that bringing the UID scheme under the Planning Commission was not to circumvent the normal accountability process but to see that the benefits of various social welfare schemes were reaching the most-deserving marginalised and poor people.
It further said that lack of such a unique identity in the country was crippling the delivery mechanism and were not making the desired impact of the upliftment of the lower strata of the society.
Stating that huge investment has been incurred by the state exchequre in the implementation of the UID Scheme, it said that the government has spent R5980.62 crore on generating 80.46 crore UID numbers till March 31, 2015.
Several MoUs have also been signed with 36 states and Union Territories as well as various Central ministries/departments for implementation of such a unique indentity scheme, the affidavit said.
