Purana Bazaar Village Council (PBVC) has appealed to the state government not to ‘insist’ on the citizens to obtain Aadhaar card.

In a press release, PBVC chairman N. Hozheto and secretary N. Athungo Ovung said various authorities ignoring the Supreme Court directive, were making the ordinary citizens run helter-skelter to get Aadhaar card and causing unnecessary harassment.

PBVC in this regard urged upon the government to instruct both public/private not to insist citizens on procuring Aadhaar card.
Citing Supreme Court directive, PBVC said the court on March 16, 2015 directed the Centre and states to stick to its earlier order and not insist on Aadhar card for granting social security benefits to citizens. The court had issued an order to that effect on September 23, 2013, it added.

Further, PBVC asked the higher authority “if Aadhaar card was mandatory for all citizens for opening bank account or getting services?”

On Election department’s move to link Aadhaar with electoral rolls, PBVC queried: “What will happen if they cannot produce the same? Will their name be eliminated from the electoral roll?”

It said that such move could lead to losing citizen’s rights.
