CHANDIGARH: Aadhaar card is not a mandatory requirement for admission or any other facilities including scholarships and fee concession, in state-run schools in Haryana. The Haryana advocate general informed the Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday that Aadhaar card was never demanded from anyone and it would never be demanded as a mandatory requirement for availing any government scheme in the state.
Hearing the AG's statement, Justice R K Jain also made it clear that state authorities should not demand Aadhaar card from any person for availing the benefits of government schemes in the state. The statement was given by the AG in response to a petition filed by one Sudhir Yadav against the government's decision to make Aadhaar card mandatory for admission in schools and availing other government facilities in the state.
The petitioner had alleged that despite the clear order of the Supreme Court, various schools and other concerned authorities were insisting on Aadhaar card of students for admissions and various other benefits. On inability of the students to submit the same, the students and parents are being harassed by expelling the students from school, it was plead.
After approaching the district education office against the insistence of Aadhaar card in a school, the petitioner went to register his grievance at the CM Window. Surprisingly, even there, he was told that the Aadhaar card was mandatory requirement for registering complaints, the petition says.
It was also alleged that thousands of students had been deprived of admission and other facilities in schools, for not submitting the unique ID number. The petitioner had prayed for exemplary punishment to concerned officers who were flouting the Supreme Court order about Aadhaar card.
