NEW DELHI: The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that the government would not be able to implement social welfare schemes and poor would not get 'two meals a day', clothing and shelter if Aadhaar scheme is scrapped.
The government said Aadhaar provided a fool-proof system to fulfill essential needs of the poor and more than 500 million people would be benefitted by the programme.
"No one wants denial of two meals a day to poor but if the scheme violates fundamental rights of citizens then it cannot be allowed. A person would not be allowed to give up his fundamental right to privacy to get two meals a day," the bench said.
