Assurance on preparing error-free electoral rolls
An all-party meeting was held here on Sunday to discuss the progress made in the ongoing National Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Programme (NERPAP).
Participating in the meeting, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam representatives alleged that names of the voters, who were traditionally backing the then ruling party in all elections in the past, had been deleted “wantonly” and hence the complaints pertaining to this “serious issue” should be looked into without anymore delay.
Collector M. Karunakaran, who chaired the meeting, assured the DMK representatives that their complaints with specific information would be properly analysed and set right.
Special NERPAP Observer A. Karthik, who participated in the all-party meeting, too assured the representatives of political parties that every possible step would be taken to ensure the preparation of error-free electoral rolls.
Tuticorin
To ensure transparency in proceedings under the NERPAP, an all-party meeting was also convened in Tuticorin on Sunday. Mr. reviewed the progress at the Collectorate.
Among the total of 13,37, 996 voters from the six Assembly constituencies — Vilathikulam, Tuticorin, Tiruchendur, Srivaikuntam, Ottapidaram and Kovilpatti — Aadhaar card numbers had been collected from 6,38,533 voters so far, said Collector M. Ravikumar, who presided over the meeting attended by representatives of various parties.
After verifying the Aadhaar card numbers, details of 6,36,200 voters had been linked with the electoral roll. Out of the total electorate, 1,92,068 voters had been indentified as absent, shifted to various localities, dead and also with multiple entries in the electoral roll.
After re-verification under this NERPAP, voters of these aforementioned categories had been reduced to 1,62,609 voters.
For inclusion of new voters, 17,139 forms were received during special camps held at polling booths across the district and 16,344 voters included in the electoral roll. The number of forms rejected was 14,987, the Collector said.
