8508 - Aadhaar relief - The Hindu

August 13, 2015

The relief felt by people following the Supreme Court ruling again that Aadhaar is not mandatory for availing government services and citizens’ rights was tempered by the fact that the court did not declare biometric identification to be illegal (“Aadhaar not mandatory, says SC”, Aug. 12).

One is also not very assured that the executive will heed the judiciary in this context. After all, various offices have been compulsorily asking for Aadhaar from applicants in spite of the court’s strong orders.

It is wise of the court to have ordered the government to give wide publicity to its orders so that people are not coerced due to their ignorance of the legal position. It remains to be seen how law-abiding the executive is.
