Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the state governments to complete Aadhaar enrolment by December 31. The PM’s direction, during a video-conference with state chief secretaries last week, indicates that Aadhaar enrolment is in its last lap and there will be no more delays, said officials.
“Ensure that all the Aadhaar enrolments are completed by end of this year. We should ensure that everyone is enrolled under the project and each citizen has an Aadhaar card number,” Modi is reported to have said. The PM stressed the importance of the Aadhaar card.
When contacted, UIDAI Director General Ajay Bhushan Pandey said the total Aadhaar card enrolments had touched 92 crore in September-end this year. “Of these, 93 per cent are people who are above 18 years of age,” he said. UIDAI officials said after the Prime Minister’s directive, they expect the states to speed up enrolment.
