Daily Pulse India: The Black Money Chase, Aadhaar’s Day of Reckoning and TV News Leadership
Oct 7, 2015
It’s the day of reckoning for the government’s UID or Aadhaar project. The ambitious project was launched to enable the government to identify each citizen digitally, and to ensure subsidies and loans are reaching the right people. It was also seen as a convenient way for Indian to open bank accounts and take mobile connections (both of which require myriad documents of proof).
However, internet watchdogs weren’t convinced about the privacy of data and challenged its use in the Supreme Court.
While the court has allowed the use of the Aadhaar cards for subsidies and government benefits, whether it can be extended to other services is what will be decided today. Although the UID project was initiated by the UPA government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embraced it wholeheartedly as it falls in line with his Digital India initiative.
