‘100 p.c. enrolment of Aadhaar by year end’
As on October 31 this year, more than five crore persons were given Aadhaar numbers
The ongoing enrolment of the National Population Register (NPR) and Aadhaar numbers is expected to pick up pace in the State.
The Directorate of Census Operations is aiming at achieving 100 per cent enrolment by December this year, according to officials.
After a request from the Directorate of Census Operations to deploy about 2,200 employees, the Bharat Electronics Ltd., had assigned 1,350 personnel last month. “Initially, the BEL had sent 1,350 people and they had already joined our team.
Another 850 persons are expected to join later this month,” said M.R.V. Krishna Rao, Joint Director of Census Operations.
With the additional hands, the work was expected to significantly improve in the State.
The Directorate of Census Operations had to manage the work with about 2,580 persons, including 1,280 people in 640 Permanent Enrolment Centres and 1,300 in mobile vans.
“We have already conducted two camps in every region and are now in the process of holding a ‘mop up’ round. Fresh applicants can approach the Permanent Enrolment Centre any time.
As on October 31 this year, a total of 5,97,90,562 persons across the State had been covered under the NPR, of them, 5,48,99,598 were given Aadhaar numbers.
“As per the Census 2011, the population of Tamil Nadu was 7,21,47,030, of them 82.87 per cent had been covered under the NPR and Aadhar numbers were given to 76.09 per cent of them,” he said.
Among 32 districts, Tirunelveli topped the list in generation of Aadhar cards with 83.86 per cent followed by Virudhunagar and Tiruchirapalli with 83.44 per cent and 82.87 per cent respectively. Chennai, Tiruppur and Tiruvannamalai districts recorded 61.15 per cent, 61.43 per cent and 68.62 per cent respectively.

“The numbers in Chennai are the lowest in the State because some members of the families are employed or studying abroad. In several cases, they are VIPs and many of them are into business that involves travel,” he explained.
