A group of transgenders staged an hour-long dharna outside the residence of the Municipal Administration and Minority Affairs Minister Qamarul Islam in the city on Sunday, seeking reservation in employment and BPL cards for transgenders.
The protesters, under the banner of Jaya Karnataka, in a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and submitted to Mr. Qamarul, said the government should extend three per cent reservation in recruitment in all government and quasi-government departments, boards and corporations.
They wanted the government to also give instructions to all its departments that preference be given to transgenders in posts that are outsourced. Agencies that supply workers to fill up these posts should be asked to give preference to transgenders.
The protesters said they were finding it difficult to get Aadhaar cards due to several conditions put forth by officials. They wanted the process of issuing Aadhaar cards simplified, and Aadhaar and BPL cards be issued for all transgenders. The pension of Rs. 500 given to transgenders every month should be increased to Rs. 3,000, they demanded.
