Schoolchildren to get Aadhaar cards
The Education Department is all set to provide Aadhaar number to schoolchildren. The department is expected to start the drive from Thursday.
The district administration has provided over 25 kits, including cameras, and with the help of the kits, the department would cover all 3,306 schools in the district over the next few months.
Over 4,46,000 children will be given Aadhaar cards. Aadhaar card will help to provide benefits to students under different schemes and re-allocate teachers to schools based on need.
Chandra Patil, Coordinator, SSA, told The Hindu that as many as 25 data entry operators have been provided with training to carry out the drive.
The Unique Identification Authority of India has been requested to give credentials to the data entry operators.
After providing Aadhaar numbers to schoolchildren, the department has plans to open zero bank accounts in the name of schoolchildren. The Aadhaar card and bank account will be linked so as to transfer scholarship amount to children online, Mr. Patil said, adding that there were many more benefits of issuing Aadhaar card to school children.
There were incidents wherein a few parents in north Karnataka region had enrolled the names of their wards in the schools in villages, though their children were studying in schools in Bangalore and in other urban centres.
This is to get a rural study certificate from the departments so their wards get certain benefits, he said.
The department could eradicate all these malpractices once the Aadhaar cards were issued to all students, Mr. Patil said.
