9121 - No need for Aadhaar to write SSC exams - TNN

HYDERABAD: The school education department on Monday delinked Aadhaar cards from the SSC exams to be held in March 2016. The department issued a notification stating that it is not mandatory for SSC students to acquire an Aadhaar card before the exams begin.

The notification, however, clarified that the department is seeking Aadhaar cards following directives from the Centre. The notification read - `The Government of India's ministry of communication and IT, de par tment of electronics and IT has sought Aadhaar details of all children in the age group of 5 to 17 years.' Following this, the school education department has established 10 UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) centres in each district, exclusively for students.

The department, on November 26, had issued a circular to all government and private schools stating that "the nominal rolls of SSC appearing candidates will not be accepted by the director of government examinations unless a certificate is enclosed stating that all candidates have been issued Aadhaar number".

The move garnered a lot of criticism, especially from parents and school authorities, as there was hardly enough time to enroll for Aadhaar before the exams. Over 5 lakh students will appear for SSC next year.
