BENGALURU: Almost six years after the Aadhaar project was launched across the country, 1.24 crore residents of Karnataka are yet to enrol for it. While response in the rural areas has been encouraging, enrolment has been poor in urban areas.
Of the 30 districts in the state, the district with the least Aadhaar enrolment is Kalaburgi, followed closely by Bengaluru Urban and Raichur districts. In terms of the number of persons yet to enrol for Aadhaar, Bengaluru Urban district tops the list.
According to Anjali Ellis Shankar, Assistant Director General of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), people from rural areas were more interested in enrolling for Aadhaar cards, as it would be of help in transfer of subsidies and other benefits. In Bengaluru Urban District, over 26 lakh people have not enrolled for Aadhaar cards.
Aadhaar generation in Kalaburgi was 74.11 per cent, which was below the state average of 80.93 per cent.
In Bengaluru Urban, Raichur and Koppal, it was 74.47 per cent, 74.77 pc and 74.95 pc respectively.
Tumakuru district has the highest percentage of enrolment, as 92.72 per cent of the population have been generated Aadhaar numbers. It is followed by Mysuru, where the number is 91.9 per cent. Tumakuru and Mysuru, it can be recalled are the two districts of Karnataka where Direct Benefit Transfer was launched on a trial basis in January 2013.
Enrolment
The number of enrolments in the State over the past six years has been 5.5 crore, while only 5.27 crore Aadhaar numbers have been generated till date. While a large proportion of the difference was related to recent enrolments — where numbers were yet to be generated, others were of people who tried to enrol twice, but failed. "In rural areas, if people don't receive Aadhaar numbers on time, they enrol again. There are also cases where people had to enrol twice, as biometric data collected from them during the first try was rejected due to various reasons," Anjali Ellis Shankar said.
