Food and Civil Supplies Minister Girish Bapat is keen to have online updation of ration cards and seeding with Aadhaar cards to ensure transparency in the system and roll out biometric ration cards soon.
“Online updation of ration card holders would give us the correct picture and Aadhaar seeding would definitely ensure better transparency. We will ensure that the updation is completed at the earliest and biometric ration cards are rolled out soon,’’ Bapat said on his department’s measures to ensure better transparency in the system and seal pilferages. The biometric system will save about 30 per cent foodgrains under PDS currently benefitting undeserving and bogus ration card holders, said the minister.
Bapat said that once Aadhaar seeding is done, the immediate measure would be to ensure a biometric system for ration card holders in the next few months. The minister said that modernisation in PDS would bring transparency and avoid duplication and computerisation of ration cards will automatically scrap bogus cards.
Recently, at a workshop for divisional commissioners and collectors, Bapat had put up a request to the CM that they need “active officers” to curb malpractices. He had noted that in almost all the PDS offices of district collectors, there were officers who were due for retirement, and they needed much active officers.Bapat said that for Aadhaar card linking, some temporary officers have been appointed, and they needed help from the collectors to ensure better managed godowns. “We need more and well constructed godowns and land for such spaces so that the material can be stored safely,” he said.
