The Meghalaya People’s Committee on Aadhar (MPCA) has apprised the State Government of an alleged clandestine conducting of Aadhar enrolment and has demanded a clarification from the Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma in this regard.
In a letter to Dr. Sangma, MPCA member, Rev PBM Basaiawmoit said that the MPCA has been informed that government officials are allegedly visiting villages in the State where they are pushing enrolment and registration for the National Population Register (NPR) by using Aadhaar while warning the villagers that unless they accept Aadhar enrolment, their entitlement to social security schemes will be done away with.
Stating that the Supreme Court has limited usage of Aadhaar only to schemes related to MGNREGA, EPF, PDS, LPG, Kerosene and pension schemes of Central and State Government employees. He also stressed that the Supreme Court has ruled that this usage of Aadhar in these schemes is voluntary. Pointing out that the Supreme Court has directed all State Governments to make public announcements that Aadhar is voluntary and not mandatory, Rev Basaiawmoit urged the Chief Minister to ensure that the Government of Meghalaya follows this Supreme Court directive.
