The architect of India’s biometrics-backed Aadhaar ID number has said the project is on track to transform the country’s economy. Speaking at the launched of a fingerprint-sensor enabled ATM being launched by DCB Bank that links to the Aadhaar database, Nandan Nilekani, former chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), said the numbers speak for themselves.  “We have already seen one billion Aadhaar numbers in the country and 100 million authentications are taking place every day using Aadhaar numbers,” he said. Nilekani said banks can now use the iris identification system along with fingerprints to authenticate banking transactions. DCB Bank plans to upgrade all of its 400 ATMs to provide Aadhaar-based functionality in the next six months. For instance, mobile devices maker Samsung has introduced tablet with iris recognition software and within a year, smart phones will come to the market with the iris recognition software, he predicted. “DCB Bank is the only commercial bank to have launched Aadhaar-enabled ATM in the country. In April this year, we had launched first such ATM on a pilot basis in Mumbai…” Murali M Natarajan, managing director & chief executive officer, DCB Bank, said. “We believe an integrated mobile device with iris capability such as, the Galaxy Tab Iris, will significantly scale the adoption and use of Aadhaar across various uses cases in banking, financial inclusion, cashless payments and subsidy disbursements” Delta ID CEO Salil Prabhakar told Planet Biometrics in an interview last week.
