Ahmedabad, July 29, 2016, DHNS:
The Gujarat government has made it mandatory for students appearing for class 10 and 12 board examinations to quote their Aadhaar numbers in application forms.
“For March 2017 examinations, it would be mandatory to fill Aadhaar numbers in the applications. In case the students do not have Aadhaar, they cannot submit their applications. Schools should inform students that class 10 and 12 students should have Aadhaar cards at the earliest,” the directive from the Gujarat State Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) read.
“Also, these (Aadhaar number) should be noted in the general registers maintained at the school level.”
The directive, however, exempts private and open board candidates from this diktat. Last year, about 10.7 lakh students took class 10 board exams, with about 5.5 lakh students appearing for both general and science streams for class 12. Students will have to quote their Aadhaar number while submitting their examination forms in September this year. “Many children lose out on the benefits as they do not have Aadhaar and they cannot arrange for one at the last moment. Moreover, girl child gets several other benefits. Thus, no deserving child should remain without the benefits,” R I Patel, secretary, GSHSEB, told DH.
“About 80% of the children already have Aadhaar. We have also set up facilities within many schools across the state to help children get Aadhaar. Now, with about two months remaining, I don’t think it would be a problem covering the remaining children,” Patel said.
