“Since the main purpose of making Aadhaar card mandatory for students was to bring awareness among them towards Aadhaar card,”the school board said.
Within two days of announcing that the rule of Aadhaar card will be mandatory for students of Class X and XII to appear in the board examinations, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) was quick to revoke it on Friday.
The decision was said to be taken after opposition from parents, students and schools who strongly opposed the rule that would not result in any benefit for the students and bring “unnecessary hassle” for them to get their Aadhaar card made within a month, before they could fill in their examination forms to be submitted in September.
Justifying the move, an official statement by the board stated, “Since the main purpose of making Aadhaar card mandatory for students was to bring awareness among them towards Aadhaar card. At present, the utility of Aadhaar card is increasing day by day which can be used by students at several places. Keeping this in mind, the decision was announced.”
Announcing the withdrawal of the decision, it stated, “But those students who do not have an Aadhaar card can also fill in their examination form. Their forms will be accepted without Aadhaar cards.”
On July 27, the GSHSEB announced the decision of making these cards compulsory for students to appear in state board examinations. Citing promotion of government’s scheme and to bring in transparency in maintaining the data, board officials claimed that this would help students in availing scholarships as well. However, there were strong protests from parents and schools which were communicated to the state board, questioning the intention of this rule.
