VISAKHAPATNAM: A section of transgenders, particularly eunuchs, too are hit hard by the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.
As many as 1,475 transgenders live in the north coastal districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam. They do not have identity cards such as Aadhaar, ration card, voter ID cards nor bank accounts. Most of them live at Bhupeshnagar in the 29th ward of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation in the city.
Surada Yellaji,+ president of North Coastal AP Transgenders' Welfare Association, said that while transsexuals who changed from a female to a male were able to get bank accounts, people who transformed into women by undergoing surgeries have not been able to get bank accounts or identity cards.
M Prema, who came to the city five years ago from Vizianagaram, said she could not get a bank account despite being the daughter of the deputy te hasildar in Kottavalasa in Vizianagaram district. "My parents threw me out. I underwent plastic surgery to become a woman. I earned money by begging and participating in parties. I have no place to save my money . And bankers are not allowing us to open accounts citing our status as the reason," Prema, an intermediate passout, said.
